Divorce risk may be higher for men marrying more attractive women

It’s not all that unusual for a man seeking a significant other in Kentucky to opt for someone more physically attractive. In fact, an analysis of online dating site data shows both men and women have a tendency to pursue potential partners up to 25 percent more attractive than themselves. However, there’s research suggesting that men who tie the knot with significantly more attractive women have a higher divorce risk.

With mismatched partnerships, the end of a marriage may be facilitated by jealousy on the part of the less attractive spouse. Another study found that women with less attractive spouses were more likely to flirt and report being less committed to their relationships.

However, the news isn’t all bad for marriages where partners have physical appearance discrepancies. One university researcher interviewed more than 80 newlywed couples about their daily relationship challenges. The results showed that the men with more attractive spouses were happier than the other husbands surveyed. Furthermore, those same men were reported to be more helpful and positive when offering assistance to their wives.

Interestingly, mismatched couples may be able to beat the odds if they are friends before getting romantic. This is the takeaway from another study that suggests physical attractiveness may not matter as much if a couple has a relationship built on a strong friendship.

Regardless of whether or not physical appearance differences exist, there are several factors that can contribute to a divorce. A spouse going through the separation process may want to reach out to a lawyer experienced in asset division. For example, the attorney may present a client with the pros and cons of keeping the marital home. In some instances, a lawyer may initiate negotiations over such issues as spousal support and custody agreements.
